New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz fell, 10-3 to Union Wednesday, suffering its second consecutive non-conference loss.
The Hawks dropped to 21-11 with the defeat, while the Garnet Chargers improved to 20-13.
Johnny McHugh earned the start and threw three innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, one walk and one strikeout, as he took his first loss of the year dropping his record to 3-1.
Union grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, stemmed from a one-out walk. The visitors took the initial lead a batter later on a RBI base hit. A sacrifice fly brought another run home before an RBI single allowed the Garnet Chargers to build a three-run cushion.
SUNY New Paltz answered in the bottom half, also taking advantage of consecutive walks before loading the bases on a
Tommy Kreider single.
Michael Ascanio brought a run across on an RBI base-on-balls with
Wallace Kirkpatrick bringing
Anthony Pericolosi home on a sacrifice fly.
Each team scored a run in the sixth with
Ryan Mackle accounting for the lone run for the Hawks on a solo shot to cut the difference to 4-3 heading into the seventh. However, a three-run seventh allowed Union some cushion and it all but put the game away with another three insurance runs in the ninth to aid in the 10-3 victory.

SUNY New Paltz tallied six hits. Mackle led the way, going 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI, followed by Kreider who went 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases. Ascanio added a hit, an RBI, two walks and two stolen bases. Pericolosi recorded a run and three walks.
The Hawks return to SUNYAC play Friday, going on the road to face SUNY Fredonia. Due to weather their series changed slightly, as the two teams will play a doubleheader Friday starting at 10 a.m. and a single game Saturday at noon.
