SUNY New Paltz Softball Secures Senior Day Sweep of Morrisville

Hawks shutout Mustangs on Senior Day, highlighted by Perfect Game thrown by senior Sydney Waldon

New Paltz, NY — It was a perfect Senior Day for Sydney Waldon.

The fourth-year right-hander from Maplewood, NJ, just three days removed from setting the program's new single-game strikeout record, not only matched that same mark Friday against Morrisville, but retired all 21 batters without allowing a single base runner on to record just the second ever Perfect Game in program history.

The feat highlighted a dominating day for the Hawks who earned their sixth-straight SUNYAC sweep after beating the Mustangs, 3-0 and 2-0, respectively, Friday prior to honoring its four graduating seniors in Waldon, Sophia D'Arcanglis, Alyssa Zangrilli and Lauren Parete.

Game 1 went quick as Waldon was sitting down batters early. Ella Sharrock gave SUNY New Paltz the offensive output needed to put the game away, as she rocked a two-run home run over the left field fence to give her team a two-run lead in the first inning. Lauren Serrao added an extra insurance run in the sixth, hitting a sacrifice fly to left to score Zangrilli.

Offense was scarce for both teams, as Sharrock, Maddie Anderson and D'Arcanglis were the only players to record a hit in the game. Jackie Rometo added a walk, run scored and two stolen bases. Waldon, meanwhile, pitched a full seven innings and put up zeros across the board while tying her own single game strikeout record of 17 on 21 batters faced. She improved her record to 9-7 with the win.

Leah Gunsett pitched a four-hitter in Game 2, as she tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and three walks on 26 batters faced in the complete game win to improve her individual record to 9-5 overall.

Gunsett helped her own cause with a lead-off double to start the second. D'Arcanglis then brought the run home as Danielle Steinmann pinch ran for Gunsett and scored from third. Serrao then added an insurance run by inning's end, as she rippled a triple to plate D'Arcanglis and bring the lead to 2-0.

It was all the offensive output the Hawks and Gunsett needed, as they improved their unbeaten SUNYAC record to 12-0.

D'Arcanglis was the catalyst offensively, as she finished with a base hit, run scored and RBI with Serrao and Gunsett recording the only extra base hits in the game.

Due to rain in the forecast Saturday, SUNY New Paltz resumes action Sunday when it hosts SUNY Cortland for a doubleheader at Mary Gray Deane Field starting at 2 p.m.
