SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Earns 65-45 Win Over Morrsiville

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz won its eighth straight game after rolling to a 65-45 victory over visiting Morrisville Friday night in the Hawk Center.

The Hawks improved to 16-2 overall and 10-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Mustangs dropped to 1-17 and 0-11, respectively.

SUNY New Paltz jumped out to a 22-8 lead after the first and extended the advantage, 34-18 by halftime. With the comfortable cushion, coach Jamie Seward played most of his bench for the majority of the second half who helped maintain the 20-point victory — the Hawks' fourth-straight.

Freshman guard Kayden Cornell was the catalyst, as the Colonie, NY native posted a career- and game-high 22 points, surpassing her previous career-high of 13 early in the third quarter. She shot 8-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range with five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 27 minutes off the bench.

Cornell officially created a 20-point difference for SUNY New Paltz, swishing on a triple off an assist from Brianna Fitzgerald with three minutes into the second half. Cornell then gave her team their largest lead of the game at 29 following another make from behind the arc with Summer Perry assisting on the play to boost the score to 55-26 with two minutes to go in the third.

Morrisville slimmed the margin slightly in the fourth, but the Hawks held onto the 20-point lead and closed out their eighth-straight victory while remaining undefeated at home.

All 12 players on the roster saw the floor for SUNY New Paltz with nine different players contributing offensively. Fitzgerald finished with seven points, six rebounds, two blocks and three steals in 16 minutes. Perry and Kamryn Hoyt also had seven points apiece off the bench with the former tallying five rebounds, three assists, one block and three steals in 24 minutes, while the latter added a rebound and a block in 22 minutes.

The Hawks are back in the Hawk Center Saturday for a re-match against Cortland, the only SUNYAC loss on the season thus far. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
