Salisbury, MD — The State University of New York New Paltz bounced back with two victories on Day 2 of the Margie Knight Tournament, which included an 8-4 victory over NYU and a 1-0 win against Carnegie Melon.
The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the first against the Violets thanks to an RBI double from
Mallory Rohon that scored
Kelsey O'Brien. The top of the order came through again for SUNY New Paltz as
Ella Sharrock brought
Ava Thys home on a sacrifice fly to left that gave her side a 2-0 advantage.
The Hawks broke the game open in the fourth, helped with walks from NYU.
Maddie Anderson and
Brianna Hardwick both earned bases on balls with
Lauren Serrao loading the bases with a single before advancing on an error in the infield, which also plated Anderson. The bases were loaded again as
Michaela Bridgwood walked on the following at bat with Serrao scoring on a wild pitch. Thys then cleared some room on the base-paths, delivering an RBI double to bring the lead to 6-0. O'Brien added another run with an RBI base hit to bring Thys home to establish SUNY New Paltz a 7-0 cushion.
After breaking the shutout in the fifth, NYU threatened a rally in the seventh. An RBI base hit scored Naya Schubel who reached on an error in left two batters earlier. The Violets added another on an RBI single with a sacrifice fly on the following at-bat cutting the deficit to 8-4.
Alex Frenza closed out the side however, forcing a lineout to cement the win.
Frenza improved to 2-2 on the year as she threw all seven innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs, three walks with five strikeouts. Thys and O'Brien each went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Thys added two runs and a walk, while O'Brien tallied a run scored, a walk and a stolen base. Serrao went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
It was a pitcher's duel in Game 2.
Morgan Smith earned the start and threw her best outing of the year, showing her resiliency after a tough afternoon Friday in a loss to Juniata. The sophomore earned her first win after throwing four shutout innings, allowing just four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Frenza came in to throw the last three and collected the save, blanking the Tartans and holding them hitless while registering three strikeouts.
Thys galvanized the offense, belting a one-out double in the third for SUNY New Paltz's first hit of the game. The Hawks jumped on the opportunity, as Sharrock brought Thys home two batters later with another double to right centerfield to break up the stalemate at 1-0.
Carnegie Melon answered with a one-out double of its own, but the threat ended as
Mallory Rohon threw out the Tartans' Maddy Beall trying to steal third. Anderson laid down the tag for the second out and Smith forced a swinging strikeout on a full count to put an exclamation point on a defensive sequence.
The Tartans threatened in the fifth, as a lead-off single and then a double put runners in scoring position with no outs. Frenza came in for relief, and the senior showed her poise as she calmly struck out the next batter on a full count, painting the corner to catch her looking before forcing a double play on a grounder to short. Thys handled the ground ball and made the throw to Sharrock at first who then threw to Serrao at second, getting the tag down to close out the side.
Frenza took care of the rest in the final two innings. Her only slight blemish was a hit-by-pitch that placed a runner on with two outs in the seventh. However, she picked herself up and got ahead in the count before fanning the final batter for a swinging strikeout to close on a 1-0 shutout victory.
Thys was the offensive catalyst, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base in the lead-off spot. Sharrock added a hit and RBI, while Rohon, Serrao and
Jenna Carmody each added hits with the latter also registering a stolen base.
SUNY New Paltz concludes the Margie Knight Tournament Sunday, competing against University of Lynchburg and tournament host Salisbury University at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
