Oswego, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz lost Game 3 of its series against hosting Oswego Sunday, 4-3.
Xavier Zykoff earned the start for the Hawks and pitched four innings, giving up three hits, three earned runs with one walk and one strikeout. He suffered the loss after the Lakers re-took the lead in the fifth.
SUNY New Paltz grabbed the initial advantage with a three-run third inning.
Luca Sieger started the frame with a one-out single up the middle. The bases were loaded three batters later for
Tommy Poggi who scored Sieger on a fielder's choice.
Wallace Kirkpatrick then plated two more for the Hawks, ripping a single to left to score Poggi and
Louis Kaleb.
The offense stalled there for SUNY New Paltz despite out-hitting Oswego, 7- 5 and couldn't take advantage of five Laker fielding errors.
The Hawks had a prime opportunity to add an insurance run after Oswego scored a run in the third and fourth innings. Sieger and Kaleb led off with singles with
Matt Sarni advancing both on a sacrifice bunt, but the threat ended there as the Lakers forced a pop-up by Poggi and a fly out from Kirkpatrick to keep the difference at one.
Oswego capitalized on the momentum in the bottom half of the fifth.
Dylan Hayes replaced Zykoff after the Lakers led off with a single, passed ball and a hit-by-pitch. The hosts scored a run two batters later on a fielder's choice to tie the score. A double steal then resulted in another run to push Oswego ahead, 4-3.
SUNY New Paltz left seven batters stranded as its offense stalled down the stretch. Sarni and Sieger each had two hits with Sieger adding a run scored. Poggi registered a double, an RBI, run scored and a stolen base.
The Hawks are back in action Tuesday, concluding their three-game series against Fredonia with a doubleheader at Onondaga Community College starting at noon.
