SUNY New Paltz Baseball Earns 7-0 Shutout Win Over Plattsburgh

Hawks shutout visiting Cardinals in Game 1 of series Thursday at Loren Campbell Field

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz opened up its series against visiting Plattsburgh Thursday at Loren Campbell Field with a dominant 7-0 shutout victory.

The Hawks improved to 21-12 overall and 10-6 in the SUNYAC while collecting their seventh straight victory.

Dylan Hayes continued his impressive play on the mound, as he earned his second start and shoved, throwing five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits with a career-high eight strikeouts.

SUNY New Paltz gave Hayes run support to start the bottom of the first, as Fabian Apicella platted the first run of the game as he took advantage of a pair of walks given up earlier in the inning.

The Hawks opened up the game in the fourth, as Apicella capitalized on another Cardinals miscue this time on an error on a grounder to third. Richetti quickly made Plattsburgh pay for the mistake, ripping a double to score Apicella to double the lead. Christian Apicella piled on, knocking an RBI single to score Richetti with Louis Kaleb then clearing the bases as he blasted a three-run home run to bring the advantage to 6-0.

Connor Catania then replaced Hayes to start the sixth and kept the shutout going, stranding two runners on. He then faced four batters in the seventh and held onto his team's six-run advantage before Matt Sarni took over to close out the final two frames. Joe Scarabino gave SUNY New Paltz one last insurance run in the seventh, lifting a ball to center to bring Garrett Grathwohl home from third on the sacrifice.

Kaleb was the catalyst as he solidified the bottom of the lineup. He went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI, knocking a double and a home run. Richetti followed as he finished 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI, a walk and two stolen bases.

SUNY New Paltz is back on Loren Campbell Field Friday, concluding its three-game series against Plattsburgh with a doubleheader starting at noon.
