Danbury, CT — The State University of New York at New Paltz Baseball program beat the WestConn Wolves, 4-2 on the road Wednesday afternoon.
Xavier Zykoff started on the mound for the Hawks pitching 1.0 inning letting up one hit.
Ryan Muskopf got the ball rolling in the top of the second, earning a hit for the Hawks.
Garrett Grathwohl grounded out on a sacrifice bunt that allowed Muskopf to move to second, but he was left on base at the turn of the inning.
Connor Catania headed out to the mound into the top of the second, pitching 1.2 innings, letting up five hits, two runs with two errors.
Luca Seiger put another hit on the board for the Hawks in the top of the third with a single. He advanced to second on a throwing error by the left fieldmen and advanced to third when
Tommy Poggi grounded out on a sacrifice bunt but was also left on base at the end of the inning.
The Wolves scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
Liam Ryan relieved Catania on the mound pitching 2.1 innings, earning the win. Ryan let up two hits and struck out five batters.
Joe Scarabino singled to right field in the top of the field and advanced to second but was not batted in.
Matt Sarni changed the pace of the game in the top of the sixth earning a single to right field. Sarni stole second and
Fabian Apicella singled with a bunt to third base. Apicella stole second and Muskopf brought both him and Sarni home with a double to center field. Grathwohl was walked and stole second as Muskopf stole third.
Joe Richetti flied out to right field on a sacrifice fly that brought Muskopf home, putting the Hawks in the lead 3-2.
Ryan Knieriemen pitched the bottom of the sixth, letting up one hit.
Johnny McHugh came out from the bullpen to pitch the final three innings earning the save, striking out two batters.
The Hawks added another run to the board in the top of the ninth. Scarabino doubled to right center. Sieger followed suit, doubling to left center and batting in Scarabino for the Hawks fourth and final run.
The Hawks head to Oswego for a three-game SUNYAC Conference Semifinal series starting Saturday at 3p.m. in Oswego, NY.
