SUNY New Paltz Softball Picks up Two Wins over Fredonia on Opening Weekend

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz Softball program hosted the Fredonia Blue Devils in their conference and home opener Friday. The Hawks won both games of the doubleheader, earning both games 10-0 in the top of the fifth inning. 
 
Game One: Alex Frenza pitched all five innings on the mound for the Hawks striking out nine batters, letting up one hit and one walk. 
 
The Hawks got it rolling early in the first earning two runs. Kelsey O'Brien walked and Ella Sharrock singled, allowing O'Brien to get on third. Mallory Rohon walked and Sharrock advanced to second. Lauren Serrao earned 2 RBI's after a double that brought both O'Brien and Sharrock home. 
 
Jenna Carmody started the bottom of the second with a bunt, earning a hit. Michaela Bridgwood singled on a bunt, and Carmody advanced to second. Ava Thys doubled, batting in both Carmody and Bridgwood. Maddie Anderson singled to center field and Thys advanced to third. O'Brien flied out to center field on a sacrifice, batting in Thys. Sharrock singled and Anderson advanced to third on an error. Sharrock stole second and Rohon was walked. With bases loaded Serrao singled, batting in both Anderson and Sharrock. Back at the top of the line up Carmody singled, batting in Rohon for the Hawks eighth run of the game. 
 
In the bottom of the third Thys reached first on an error by the short stop. Anderson flied out in a sacrifice, allowing Thys to advance to second. O'Brien tripled batting in Thys (unearned). Sharrock grounded out to the short stop, earning an RBI as O'Brien crossed the plate for the Hawks 10th and final run of the game.
 
Game Two: Morgan Smith pitched 4.0 innings, striking out two batters, one hit and one walk. Nicolette Ferraro pitched 1.0 innings and struck out the final batter ending the game. 
 
Thys started the game by earning a single of the second pitch of the game Anderson walked and Thys advanced to second. Sharrock walked and with bases loaded Rohon singled batting in Thys. Serrao bunted, batting in Anderson. Carmody was hit by a pitch allowing Sharrock to score the third run of the game. 
 
In the bottom of the second Thys singled to third base. Anderson earned a double and Thys advanced to third. Rohon popped up to the catcher but earned and RBI, bringing Thys home. 
 
Brianna Hardwick doubled in the bottom of the third. Kaitlyn Gordon pinch ran for her and advanced to third after Carmody singled, then stole second. Bridgwood singled earning 2 RBI's. She then advanced to second on an error. Anderson doubled and Bridgwood scored the seventh run of the game. Sharrock doubled and Anderson scored. Rohon singled and Sharrock scored the final run of the inning. 
 
Hardwick and Halle Sacharoff walked to start the bottom of the fourth. Ava Smith was hit by a pitch. With bases loaded Darian Palmer reached first on an error by second base, earning an RBI as Hardwick crossed home plate scoring the 10th run of the game.
 
The Hawks continue their opening weekend Saturday with an 11a.m. and 1p.m. doubleheader.
