New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz didn't take long to take care of business in its first outing of the SUNYAC Tournament Thursday.
The hosting No. 1 seeded Hawks needed just five innings and one blowout second inning to earn an 8-0 shutout victory over No. 5 seed Oneonta on Mary Gray Deane Field, as they head into Day 2 in the winner's bracket against No. 2 Cortland.
The Red Dragons eliminated No. 4 seed Fredonia in a shutout earlier in the day to earn another game against SUNY New Paltz in the night cap of a four-game slate to kick off the 2026 SUNYAC playoffs. The only scoring that occurred between the two teams happened in the bottom of the second thanks to a Hawks two-out rally.
Jenna Carmody scored
Mallory Rohon for the first run of the game, sneaking an RBI base hit into the shallow right field gap. Oneonta nearly got out of a bases loaded jam though to keep the deficit just as one with back-to-back strikeouts, but
Maddie Anderson galvanized her side after getting down in the count, ripping a single through the left side of the infield to plate
Kate Hope from third.
Kelsey O'Brien added on, winning a full count as she sliced an RBI base hit to bring
Lauren Serrao home.
Ella Sharrock then lifted an RBI single over short, pushing the lead to 5-0. Rohon came up to bat again and continued the SUNY New Paltz run, as she ripped a single through the left side to bring O'Brien home.

The Red Dragons were forced into a pitching change and the first pitch sailed high, allowing Sharrock to score easily from third. Rohon then brought the cushion to eight, also scoring on a wild pitch.
The run support was all Hawks ace
Alex Frenza needed to secure the shutout victory. The senior transfer gave up just three hits, no walks and had four strikeouts to improve her record to 16-5 and advance her team to the winner's bracket Friday.
Sharrock led the team offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI and a double. Rohon also went 2-for-3, adding two runs and an RBI. Anerson had a hit, run scored and two RBI with O'Brien tallying a run, RBI and walk.
SUNY New Paltz quest for its second ever SUNYAC title continues Friday as it starts the morning against No. 2 Cortland at 10 a.m. The winner will punch its ticket into the SUNYAC Championship Saturday with the loser facing the winner of the second game of the day in No. 3 Buffalo State and No. 5 Oneonta in the night cap at 3 p.m.
