loren campbell memorial field

Loren Campbell Memorial FieldLoren Campbell Memorial Field is one of the oldest athletics facilities on campus, having served the baseball team for more than 50 years. The field was named after the former athletic director and coach, Loren Campbell. Campbell worked for New Paltz from 1932-68, coaching various sports, among those baseball. Campbell played a big part of initiating varsity sports and was accorded the honor of having the field named after him in May of 1982 because of his integral role in the establishment of New Paltz Athletics. Over the last decade, the baseball field received many renovations, and has become one of the top collegiate fields in the region.

Former New Paltz head baseball coach Mike Juhl was responsible for many of the improvements at Campbell Field. Juhl built dugouts, painted bleachers, put up fencing, cleared out marsh, fertilized and cut grass and edged the baselines during the field's renovation in 1999.

To simplify maintenance, a professional in-ground irrigation system was installed. Campbell Field has a premium playing surface for baseball only with a natural-grass playing field. The infield, game mound and plate areas all consist of beam clay, while the warning track consists of crusher. In addition, both bullpens have double pens. A padded backstop also sits behind home plate. In 2010, a new wind screen surrounding the perimeter of the outfield was installed with the new Hawk logo emblazoned on it.

Prior to the 2012 season, the field underwent major renovations. In addition to the field being re-sodded and resurfaced with Kentucky Blue Grass, the clay was replaced on both the basepaths and the pitcher's mound. The field also saw
the renovation of its bullpens and the installation of a new scoreboard in left field in 2012.
