Men's & Women's Diving
Competitive diving was an integral part of the swimming programs at SUNY New Paltz — 40 years for men and 19 years for women — until the College discontinued the sport after the 2002-2003 season. Inadequate competition and unacceptable facilities led to the termination of diving as part of the men’s and women’s swim programs.
When Elting Gymnasium opened in fall 1964, its six lane, 25-yard pool was considered state-of-the-art. At the deep end of the pool were stationed two 1-meter diving boards to accommodate the diving portion of a competitive swim meet. As all the swimming pools at SUNY campuses were built to the same specifications, 1-meter diving became a staple of the annual SUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championship.
However, campuses across the country began to upgrade their swimming facilities to accommodate both 1-meter and 3-meter diving. SUNY New Paltz attempted to provide training for divers in both events — not at the Elting Pool, which was now inadequate for diving of any kind, but at neighboring Marist College, using both the Marist diving well and the mentorship of Marist’s diving coach. When this proved to be too cumbersome both financially and pragmatically, the decision was made to terminate diving as a sport.
Diving Coaches
If past histories are to be followed, it was uncommon for most swim teams within the SUNYAC to have as specialized a coach as a diving coach. It would fall on the shoulders of the head swim coach to also offer instruction for divers. If the swim team was fortunate to be able to have either a paid part-time assistant coach or a volunteer assistant coach, that individual might have responsibility for the training of divers. In the early years of SUNY New Paltz's program, coaches Ernest Maglsicho, David Ross and Art Stockin each assumed the dual role of swim and dive coach. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, coach Stockin was able to have assistance from a volunteer diving coach, Brother Damian, a Capuchin Friar assigned to nearby St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. After Br. Damian's departure and the removal of the one meter diving boards at the Elting Pool, diving training was offered at the Marist College pool under the guidance of Marist diving coaches. From 1994-95 until the discontinuation of diving at the close of the 2002-03 season, former Hawk diver and New Paltz graduate Robyn Gullickson served as both the men’s and women’s diving coach, helping Kathryn MacCrate to SUNYAC prominence, culminating in her 2003 one-meter SUNYAC Championship
