The history of SUNY New Paltz Track and Field is full of starts and stops, ups and downs over the course of nearly 40 years. Track and field can be divided into two “eras:” the “Men’s Era” and the “Modern Era.”

The Men's Era (1967-74; 1977-79)

In 1966, the Department of Physical Education and Athletics made a decision to add a men’s track and field program to the intercollegiate athletic offerings available to the College's growing male population.

To coach both the long standing cross country team and create the track & field team, Edward “Ed” Bell, a dynamic young coach, was hired in spring 1967. Bell had been an outstanding scholastic track star at Queen’s Andrew Jackson High School and had led Tennessee State University to two NAIA national championships. With a master's degree from Michigan State and a host of recruitment contacts in the five boroughs, Bell quickly assembled a competitive men’s track and field team for the spring 1969 season.

Bell’s teams were well respected both in the New York Metro area and in SUNY. Regrettably, the fortunes of the program he developed took a hit in the early 1970’s when the Student Association severely defunded the intercollegiate athletes program, so much so that the 1972 team had to self-fund itself in order to continue intercollegiate participation. Ed Bell left coaching after the 1972 season and moved to a new career in undergraduate admissions, devoting his energies to enhancing the numbers and experiences of students of color on campus. For the 1973 season coach Joe Donovan and in 1974 Donovan and athletic director Eugene De Luca mentored a vastly diminished men’s team.

When the men’s athletic program withdrew from SUNYAC in 1977 and joined the Central Atlantic College Conference, the men’s track and field program was resurrected under the guidance of coach Joe Keller. This new team participated for three seasons in the CACC, attaining respectability at this level of competition.
