Football
Football had been intermittently played at New Paltz Normal School, depending on the number of male students enrolled at any given time. Most games were of the "intramural" variety with occasional "outside" games against community teams. With the arrival of the first male physical education teacher, Loren D. Campbell in 1932, football was elevated to a varsity sport. As the 1933
Paltzonian noted:
(page 173)
"Along with the influx of men, the fall of 1932 saw the return of football to New Paltz Normal School. A squad of 35 men reported and had a favorable season with great promise of developing into a strong array for next year.
"Under the capable coaching of Loren D. Campbell, there has been instilled a competitive spirit, combined with teamwork and sportsmanship, culminating in a whole-hearted interest on the part enthusiasm displayed on the sidelines."
Under Campbell's direction, football was played for five seasons from 1932-33 to 1936-37. Campbell taught physical education classes, as well as coaching football, basketball, baseball and tennis. At the conclusion of the 1936-37 season a decision was made to concentrate on just two men's sports: basketball and baseball, with football and tennis being discontinued so as not to continue to spread Campbell too thin in his professional responsibilities.
