Men's Tennis

Clay courts and always under the lights...

While it can be safely assumed that some of the few men who were in attendance at New Paltz Normal School played tennis, it was not until the first expansion of men’s intercollegiate athletics in the mid-1950’s did competitive men's tennis take hold. With the addition of Dr. Charles P. Wolbers as the second men’s physical education instructor and coach in fall 1956, the intercollegiate athletic program for men expanded from just two sports to five the following year.

Dr. Charles P. Wolbers was already a respected authority on tennis when he arrived at New Paltz in 1956. He would later go on to lead not only the New Paltz men’s tennis team to championship titles, but also the East Stroudsburg University men’s and women’s tennis program to regional prominence. He was inducted into the New Paltz Athletic Hall of Fame, the ESU Athletic Hall of Fame and most significantly, received the USTA-International Tennis Hall of Fame Educational Merit Award in 1985 for his service to the sport.

The first recorded mention of a varsity men’s tennis team was in the May 6, 1957 of the Kingston Daily Freeman, “New Paltz State Netman Win 3-2.” Dr. Wolbers found New Paltz to be the perfect setting for a competitive tennis program. College president William J. Haggerty, was a tennis aficionado and had six competitive grade, clay courts-with lights, constructed on campus (where the current Sojourner Truth LIbrary parking lot is now located ). Compared to courts on other college campuses, these were invaluable recruitment lures.

While the first two seasons of men’s tennis were ones of learning and growth, the 1959 season proved to be the culmination of Dr. Wolbers’ lessons to his Hawk team. That 1959 team was the co-champions with SUNY Cortland, of the first NYS Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (the forerunner of today’s SUNYAC) men’s tennis championship. This was the first athletic title of any kind, for either women or men, to be earned by a New Paltz athletic team.

After a loss (3-6) to Albany State on May 19,1957, the Hawks reeled off an incredible 39 consecutive victories over three seasons, until a close 5-4 loss to Bard College on April 28, 1962. In that period, the Hawks would win the NYSIAC title outright in 1960, and finished second in 1962. There was no NYSIAC tournament in 1961

Dr. Wolbers left SUNY New Paltz for East Stroudsburg University after the 1961 season and was replaced by Douglas Sheppard for the 1962 season. Ernest Maglischo led the Hawks for the 1963, 1964, 1965 seasons and coached the Hawks to an undefeated regular season and the 1965 SUNYAC tennis title. A season later, coach Al Miller led SUNY New Paltz to the 1966 SUNYAC tennis title and to a fourth place finish in 1967. For 26 years, from 1968 through 1993, the Hawks were under the mentorship of Hawk Hall of Famer Bob Durkin, who led the team to a 1971 second place SUNYAC finish and runner-up spots in the 1979 and 1981 CACC championships. On Bob Durkin’s untimely death in 1993, the program came under the guidance of Robert Siracuse, who led the Hawks to three winning seasons until 1998 and a record-setting 13 wins in 1996. Under the watchful eyes of Rob Bruley from 1999 until the program's termination in 2004, the team scored four winning seasons. Bruley’s final squad finished with a 9-5 record, winning their final ever match, 5-2,over Hunter College.

Greatness from Buffalo...and Beyond...

Along with the teaching of Dr. Wolbers, it was a freshman from Buffalo who jumped started the early tennis Hawks to regional prominence. Gordon Krajna was the first Hawk superstar in any sport, even before the legendary soccer great Gene Ventrigilia. Krajna dominated collegiate tennis within SUNY and the New York-New Jersey, Connecticut region. He was undefeated at the first singles position for three consecutive years. His career match record stands at 41-1, his only loss coming in his senior year, a close 5-4 match won by Bard College's Jim Barker. Over Krajna’s four year career, the Hawks tennis team lost only two matches. Krajna was the first Hawk ever to win a SUNYAC individual championship, earning the No. 1 singles title in the 1959 NYS Intercollegiate Athletic Conference(the forerunner of SUNYAC). He repeated this feat in the 1962 SUNYAC championship. He also teamed with, first, Jack Gatje, then Bob Dillman, to earn NYSIAC and SUNYAC runner-up finishes at No. 1 doubles position.

The Hawks produced six additional individual SUNYAC tennis champions in the following years: Marty Jacobson at fourth singles in 1965; Art Corwin at first singles and Richie Griffin at third singles in 1966; Richie Griffin at third singles in 1967; Alan Masters at sixth singles in 1968; Rich Schimmel at first singles in 1971.

In doubles competition at the SUNYAC Championship, SUNY New Paltz produced four doubles champions: Jerry Ziering & Marty Jacobson in 1965; Art Corwin and Larry Huntington in 1966 and again in 1967; and Rich Schimmel & Mark Chalfin in 1971.

In all probability SUNY New Paltz produced additional champions in singles and doubles in men's tennis the succeeding years; unfortunately records of any kind from most past seasons are incomplete or non-existent.
