Hawks Battle Bengals to 1-1 (2OT) Tie

NEW PALTZ, NY- Sherri Lajoie scored her first goal of the season to help the Hawks overcome an early second half goal by Buffalo State to hold off the Bengals for the tie.

 

Buffalo State first chance came in the 11th minute when Leighana Krzyanowski shot was initial blocked by the Hawks keeper and was quickly cleared away by defender Shannon Cobb.  The first half, the Bengals outshot the Hawks 6-1.

 

The Bengals would take the early second half lead in the 51st minute when Hannah Williams free kick found Kristina Boberskyj for the one-timer goal.

 

In the 72nd minute, Samantha Abravanel beat her defender down the field and her shot hit the crossbar, but Sherri Lajoie was there to gather the rebound and tie the contest at 1-1.

 

In the 78th minute, Ashley Mazurkiewicz beat two Hawks defenders and struck a shot to the left corner, but the Hawks keeper made diving save to maintain the tie game.  Seconds later, the Hawks Alexa Balestrieri sent a through ball to the left corner of the 18 yard box to Stephanie Martinez, whose shot was stopped by the diving Bengals keeper.

 

With three minutes to go, Buffalo State late chance in regulation came when Barb Kiliszek beat the defender down the middle of the field and was one-on-one with the Hawks keeper.  Kiliszek ripped the shot to the left corner, but Danielle Gura made a diving save to send the game into overtime.

 

Twenty seconds into the first overtime, Melissa Mahoney shot hit the post and was cleared away by Shannon Cobb as the Hawks dodged the Bengals attack.

 

In the 108th minute, the Bengals had an excellent opportunity to beat the Hawks when Leighana Krzyanowski cross from the right corner found Melissa Mahoney for the shot 12 yards out, but Danielle Gura made a diving save to deny the Bengals.

 

Meghan Jarrell made three saves in net for the Bengals.  Buffalo State improves to 2-2-4 overall and 0-1-1 in SUNYAC play.

 

Danielle Gura recorded the tie in net, saving 10 shots as the Hawks improve to 3-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in SUNYAC play.
