SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore College (7-6-2, 1-2-1 Liberty) prevailed in a defensive battle against the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (7-8-0, 3-4-0 SUNYAC) by a count of 1-0 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
Skidmore's Doug Yeates put away the lone goal of the game when he scored in the 67th minute. Using a pass from Diego Reinero, he beat freshman goalkeeper
Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y.) low on a breakaway.
The Hawks had two quality scoring chances in the second half. Senior forward
Dave Gardiner (Malta, N.Y.) had a diving header in the 48th minute, while junior midfielder
Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, N.Y.) blasted a shot from the top of the box at the 66:41 mark. Both shots were turned away by Skidmore goalkeeper Nick Peterson.
On the contest, New Paltz outshot Skidmore, 13-12, but the host Thoroughbreds held the upper hand in corner kicks, 6-5.
Power dropped to 2-2 on the year in net for the Hawks, making a game-high seven stops. Peterson earned his third shutout of the season with a five-save effort in between the pipes for the Thoroughbreds.
New Paltz finishes out State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23. On Friday, the Hawks host SUNY Oswego at 3 p.m. before entertaining SUNY Cortland on Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of Saturday's match, the blue and orange will honor its five seniors.
After Saturday's results around the SUNYAC, the Hawks are in a three-way tie for sixth in the league standings.
