Late Offensive Surge by Geneseo Trips New Paltz in 3-1 Setback

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – While both the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (5-6-0, 2-3-0 SUNYAC) and SUNY Geneseo (5-4-1, 2-2-0 SUNYAC) took 10 shots in the second half, the Blue Knights prevailed in the end, winning, 3-1, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Field.

Geneseo's Craig Schackner opened scoring in the 38th minute, using a Ben Ariola pass to set up a successful finish.

After having been outshot, 10-4, in the first stanza, the Hawks came out of the break on fire, taking three shots in the first four minutes of the new half. Senior forward Dave Gardiner (Malta, N.Y.) knotted the tally at one apiece when he tickled the twine in the 63rd minute, and New Paltz clung to that 1-1 tie for the majority of the period. Fortunes changed for the Hawks, however, when Andy Marzo found the feet of James Hainsworth in the 84th minute. Hainsworth then ripped a shot at point-blank range into the back of the net. Finally, the Blue Knights put the game out of reach when Ian Mort connected on a penalty kick at 87:11.

On the game, Geneseo outshot New Paltz, 20-14, but the Hawks held the corner kick advantage at 8-2.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Viscardi (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss despite making five stops in net for the Hawks, while Sam Murphy prevailed in between the posts for the Blue Knights, saving six shots.

New Paltz continues its SUNYAC road trip on Friday, Oct. 8, when it meets up with SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
