Box Score FREDONIA, NY- The New Paltz men's basketball team fell to host Fredonia State Friday night 67-62 in overtime to fall to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in the league. The Hawks had four players score in double-digits, but the Blue Devils shot 41 percent from behind the arc to hold off the Hawks.
Harris Wichard scored a game-high 13 points and five rebounds and
Shereef Taylor netted 12 points and six rebounds.
Nick Taldi finished with 11 points on 7-of-7 from the free throw line and
Jayquan Anderson had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks.
Amir Billups led the Blue Devils with 12 points and four rebounds and Julius Bryant finished with a double-double, 11 points and 12 rebounds. Joseph Monahan netted nine points and Sean Donahue finished with eight points as the Blue Devils improve to 9-11 overall and 7-7 in the league.
The teams played to a tight game in the opening minutes as the Hawks held a one point advantage, but Fredonia quickly jumped out in front with a 15-1 run to take a 20-6 lead. The blue Devils took a 39-25 lead into the break. Fredonia bench outscored the Hawks bench 26-8 in the half, but the Hawks held a 6-0 advantage in second chance points.
The Hawks never folded, starting the second half on a 11-0 run to pull within three at 39-36. The Hawks took their first lead in the half on Wichard's second free throw with two minutes, 51 seconds remaining in the game. The Hawks built their lead to four on back-to-back free throws from Taldi. The Hawks turned around the second half outscoring the Blue Devils in points in the paint, 12-4, points of turnovers, 16-2, second chance points 12-2 and 10-5 off the bench.
In the overtime session,
Pete Carmel opened with a lay-up, but Fredonia responded with a 8-2 run to hold off the Hawks for the overtime victory.
The Hawks return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. against Buffalo State.
