Box Score FREDONIA, NY- The New Paltz women's basketball team went on the road and defeated the Blue Devils from Fredonia in double overtime, 77-76 to improve to 13-9 overall and 10-5 in the league. The Blue Devils fall to 10-10 overall and 6-8 in the league. The Hawks return to the court tomorrow to wrap-up their conference road trip at 2 p.m. against Buffalo State.
Maggie Farrell led the way for the Hawks with 18 points, four rebounds and three assists. Alexandra McCullough finished with a solid game with 14 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Maliqua Fisher added 13 points and eight rebounds and
Carly Minehan and
Kristen Caban each finished with 10 points a piece.
Carolina Hourihan had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Devils and Merissa Gaeta finished with a double-double, 17 points and 13 rebounds. Katie Landy had 17 points and seven rebounds and Grace Moore added nine points for Fredonia.
Fredonia jumped out in the first half with a 6-0 run in the first four minutes, but the Hawks battled back to tie the game at 6-6. The Hawks took their first lead of the half on back-to-back free throws by McCullough with 12 minutes, 12 seconds to go in the half. With a one point lead, 18-17, the Hawks used a 9-2 run to take a seven point advantage with five minutes, 36 seconds to go. After Fredonia cut the lead to four with five minutes, 10 seconds remaining, the Hawks used a 13-3 run to end the half and go into the break up 40-26. The Hawks bench outscored the Blue Devils bench 27-7 in the half and the entire Fredonia team, 27-26.
In the second half, Fredonia started the half on a 10-0 lead to cut the Hawks double-digit lead to four. The Hawks responded with by regaining their double-digit lead at 53-42 with 12 minutes, 11 seconds to go. Fredonia cut into the Hawks lead again very slowly and was able to pull within three with six seconds left in the game. With six seconds to go, Hourihan received the pass from Nicole Calbi and hit the three-pointer as time expired. The Hawks bench outscored Fredonia's bench 12-1 in the half and 39 to 8 in the game.
In the first overtime, the Hawks #Caitlin Irwin gave the Hawks a two point lead with back-to-back free throws, but it was Calbi hitting a jumper as time expired to force a second overtime session. In the second overtime, the Hawks trailed by one with seven seconds to go, but Farrell's jumper gave the Hawks the 77-76 win.
