Hawk Women’s Volleyball Debuts with 3-0 Victory over Montclair State

Box Score

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team leaned on a balanced attack to drop Montclair State University in straight sets (25-19, 25-9, 25-16) in non-conference action Wednesday evening at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Sophomore middle hitter Dana Vosilla (Massapequa, N.Y.) notched a match-high eight kills, hitting at an eye-popping .667 clip. Junior outside hitter Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and freshman libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) shored up the Hawks (1-0) on the defensive end, accumulating 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Hawks dominated from the get-go, taking the first set, 25-19, behind an efficient offense. New Paltz fashioned a .364 attack percentage, which overpowered Montclair State's (0-1) defensive efforts.

Montclair State's six attack errors facilitated a quick second set, as the Hawks cruised, 25-9. Junior right side Tara Annunziata (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) helped deal the final blow, racking up four kills in New Paltz's match-winning 25-16 third set.

Marta Topor and Kristen Bronowich paced the Red Hawks with five kills each, while Topor offered a match-high 12 digs.

"We got a little bit over-antsy in the first game," head coach Matt Giufre said. "We settled down from there. It was valuable to have everyone get game experience heading into this weekend."

New Paltz returns to action on Friday at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic in Cortland, N.Y. The Hawks have a 4 p.m. match with Baptist Bible College on Friday before facing Lebanon Valley College later on in the evening at 6 p.m.
