ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team rebounded from a tough 3-0 loss to No. 21 Heidelberg University (25-21, 25-22, 25-16) with a thrilling five-set, 3-2 victory over host Nazareth College (22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12) in the first day of the Golden Flyer Tournament on Friday evening.

Against Heidelberg, senior outside hitter Stephanie Skrobach (Webster, N.Y.) led the attack, posting seven kills. Freshman setter Brigid Moore (Victor, N.Y.) dished out a team-high 18 assists, while freshman libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Skrobach tied for the team lead in digs with 10 each.

The Hawks saw four different players reach double-digit figures in kills against Nazareth, as the blue and orange showed resiliency and stamina in a back-and-forth match. The Golden Flyers won the first set, 25-22, but New Paltz snatched back the momentum, taking the next two sets. Nazareth forced a fifth set after it edged the Hawks, 25-23, in the fourth stanza. New Paltz wound up beating Nazareth for the second time this season, using a strong fifth set to prevail, 3-2. The Hawks defeated the Golden Flyers, 3-0, on Saturday, Sept. 4, in the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.

Junior outside hitter Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y.) keyed the offense with 15 kills, while freshman setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y.) handed out 38 assists. Skrobach shored up the defense with 30 digs, while sophomore right side Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) followed closely behind with 26.

“Nazareth was a great win for us,” head coach Matt Giufre said. “We came off a 3-0 win [from last weekend], and they played great. It was good to get five-game experience. I'm very proud of the upperclassmen, and our younger players also played very well at critical times.”

The Hawks (5-2) meet up with Hiram College tomorrow at noon in the final day of the Golden Flyer Tournament. The opponent and time of the fourth match have yet to be determined.
