Hawks Possess Well in 3-1 Loss to Union (N.Y.)

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Maggie Vasconi (Staten Island, N.Y.) put the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (1-4-0) on the board in the 61st minute, but host Union (N.Y.) College (3-0-0) proved too strong in the end, as the Dutchwomen won, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in the Dutchwomen Classic at College Park.

Despite the final score, head coach Colleen Bruley felt that the Hawks played well.

“It's funny; I don't think I've ever felt this good after a loss,” Bruley said. “We're really starting to come together. We possessed extremely well, and we didn't give them too many great scoring opportunities.”

Union's Melissa Mansfield netted her second goal of the season in the 10th minute to give the home team an early advantage. Rachel Cohen tacked on a goal at the 35:39 mark to put Union out in front, 2-0, heading into the intermission.

Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.), who earned the start in net for the Hawks, made four stops in the first half, but sophomore defender Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y.) took over the netminding duties for the second stanza. Bowling wound up with four saves as well.

Melissa Mansfield found the feet of her sister, Jennifer, in the 58th minute to extend the Dutchwoman advantage to 3-0.

Vasconi erased Union's shutout bid in the 61st minute when she directed a pass from sophomore forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y.) into the back of the net.

Union outshot New Paltz, 21-11, and also took six corner kicks to the Hawks' one.

Abby Stohler played the full 90 in goal for the Dutchwomen and made four stops. She moves to 3-0-0 on the year with the victory.

New Paltz returns to the College Park pitch tomorrow for a noon Dutchwomen Classic matchup with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
