Box Score
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A standout performance in net by sophomore goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.) in addition to superb play from the back line allowed the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (1-4-1) to hold the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2-1-1) to a 0-0 tie in Dutchwomen Classic action Sunday afternoon at College Park.
Both teams played evenly in the first half, as RPI held the advantage in shots at 6-3, while New Paltz placed more shots on target (2-1).
Sophomore defender
Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y.) nearly put the Hawks on the board at the 56:16 mark, but her shot attempt was thwarted by a diving Stephanie Vargas. Vargas, who finished the afternoon with three stops, recorded her second shutout of the season after holding New Paltz scoreless through 110 minutes in between the pipes for the Engineers.
Vega turned away two shots in the second half and made her fourth and final save of the contest when she stopped a scoring attempt in the first overtime period. Vega's shutout was her second of the year.
The Hawks start State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday, Sept. 18, when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y., to face the 19th-ranked Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
