Hawks Start Strong in Conference, Gardiner Nets Both Goals

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.
– Senior forward Dave Gardiner (Malta, N.Y.) scored two goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Hawks past conference-rival SUNY Oneonta. New Paltz (4-3-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) defeated the Red Dragons (3-2-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) on their home turf by a score of 2-1.

Gardiner struck first in the 34th minute when freshman midfielder Max Kornstein (Glenmont, N.Y.) found him for the score. Four minutes later, junior defender Corey Perkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) found Gardiner to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

At the end of the first stanza, the Hawks held a 4-3 edge in corners, and the Red Dragons established a 9-7 cushion in shots.

The Hawks maintained their aggressive approach coming out of the gate in the second half. In the 59th minute, junior forward Jimmy Altadonna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) set up Gardiner with a cross, but his shot was blocked by an Oneonta defender. Oneonta denied a Hawk scoring chance again five minutes later, as Altadonna's header was saved by the diving Red Dragon netminder.

The Red Dragons responded with a goal in the 89th minute by Jonathan Kowalski. However, the Hawks were able to prevail with the conference victory, winning by a final score of 2-1.

New Paltz finished with a 7-5 margin in corners and Oneonta held a 19-15 advantage in shots.

Oneonta keeper Jesse Dobson allowed two goals while saving three shots in 45 minutes of play. Maxwell Siegelman took over the reins in the second half compiling three saves.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Viscardi (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) boasted nine stops for the blue and orange.

The Hawks return to action on Friday when they host Buffalo State. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
