Vega Stops 16 Shots in Overtime Defeat

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.
– Despite a career-high save mark (16) for sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y.), the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Royals of the University of Scranton in a single-overtime contest held Friday afternoon on Alumni Field.

Vega kept the Hawks in the game by saving five shots in the first period, eight shots in the second period and three shots in overtime play. Her concentration seemed to counter the opposing attack with each shot on goal.

The Royals (2-0-0) struck at the 98:36 mark when Rebecca Hextall found the back of the net, securing the overtime victory.

Scranton finished with a 35-9 margin in shots and 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In between the pipes for the Royals, Caitlin Byrne collected six saves in roughly 99 minutes of play.

New Paltz (0-2-0) returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to take on Skidmore College. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
