Hawks Stunned on the Road at Brockport, 74-67

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (7-7, 5-2 SUNYAC) dropped a 74-67 decision at the hands of The College at Brockport (3-9, 1-4 SUNYAC) in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday afternoon in Brockport, N.Y., losing for the second time in as many days.

Poor shooting from three-point range doomed the Hawks, as they shot just 12.5 percent (3-of-24) from beyond the arc. Conversely, Brockport shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from distance and posted a 48.0 percent (24-of-50) field-goal percentage to New Paltz's 37.7 percent (26-of-69).

The Hawks led by as many as six in the first half, as a made jumper by junior guard Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 16:46 to go in the period put New Paltz up 10-4. The Golden Eagles gained their first lead of the contest with 13:07 remaining in the first stanza when Alex Leung drilled a three-pointer, and they held at least a share of the advantage until junior point guard Kaitlin Clifford (Staten Island, N.Y.) put the Hawks up two at 31-29 with 2:04 to go in the first. Mallory Buckley made two free throws for Brockport with 23 seconds remaining in the period, and the Golden Eagles took a 36-34 lead into the locker room.

Brockport blew the game open with a 9-0 run to start the second half, but New Paltz crept back into it with a 10-3 spurt to come within four at 48-44 with 13:15 left on the clock. The Hawks would not get any closer the rest of the way, and the Golden Eagles would add a third victory to the win column.

Three New Paltz players reached double figures, which included sophomore guard Maliqua Fisher's (North Babylon, N.Y.) double-double of 16 points and 10 boards. Freshman forward Jeanette Scott (West Babylon, N.Y.) poured in 12 coming off the bench, and Irwin chipped in 11. Clifford, Irwin and Fisher all had a team-high three assists, while Irwin came away with an astounding number of steals with six. Sophomore forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y.) and Scott each collected two blocks as well.

Desiree Fauvelle led Brockport with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, which included a 4-of-6 mark from three-point range, and 4-of-4 shooting from the line. Alex Leung added a line of 13 points, three assists and three steals, while Sarah Alwardt stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.

New Paltz looks to right the ship on Friday, Jan. 21, when it takes on SUNY Oneonta at the Hawk Center in SUNYAC action. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
