Hawk Men’s Soccer Comes up Short in 2-1 Loss to Oneonta

Box Score Box Score

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (6-8-1, 2-4-1 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Oneonta (9-2-2, 6-0-1 SUNYAC) by a count of 2-1 in the Red Dragons' Homecoming game Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

The visiting Hawks got on the scoreboard first when senior midfielder Michael Santalesa (New Hyde Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) buried his third goal of the season off a pass into the box from senior midfielder/forward Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) in the 15th minute.

Oneonta answered back less than a minute later when Raymond Fitzpatrick capitalized and scored on a loose ball in front of the New Paltz net at 15:17. The Red Dragons struck again in the 31st minute when Eric Fortier scored his eighth goal of the year, tied for the SUNYAC lead, off an assist from Gary Laronde.

That goal turned out to be the deciding one as neither team scored in the second half. The Hawks were able to get off 12 shots in the contest, but goalkeeper Max Siegelman made four saves for Oneonta to earn the win. Freshman goalkeeper Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) made three saves for the Hawks in the loss.

New Paltz drops to 2-4-1 in conference play, and loses its second straight game in league action. Oneonta stays atop the SUNYAC standings, and remains undefeated at home this season with its sixth consecutive win overall.

The Hawks travel to Fredonia, N.Y., on Friday, Oct. 21, to take on SUNY Fredonia at 3 p.m. in the second contest of a three-game road trip.
