PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (20-9, 6-2 SUNYAC East) swept past SUNY Plattsburgh, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-21), before edging SUNY Oneonta, 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25, 15-10), on the second day of the second round of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division Pool Play on Saturday at Plattsburgh.
With a final conference divisional mark of 6-2, the Hawks locked up the SUNYAC East Division's No. 2 seed into the 2011 SUNYAC Volleyball Championship Tournament, which runs from Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 3-5, at SUNY Cortland, the East Division's top seed. New Paltz squares off against SUNY Geneseo, the West Division's No. 3 seed, in the quarterfinal round on Nov. 3.
The Hawks hit a stellar .277 as a team against Plattsburgh, overpowering the host Cardinals in nearly every phase of the game. Senior outside hitter

For Plattsburgh, Rosi Cummings totaled a team-high 10 kills, but the most impressive number of the match came on the defensive end. Andrea Kalter racked up 27 digs, contributing heavily toward the Cardinals' 66-dig total. Maggie Schrantz put up a big block on the front row, gaining three block solos and one block assist.
Oneonta went toe-to-toe with New Paltz, forcing the Hawks to rely on their consistent defense to come away with the victory. DiGiovanna and junior outside hitter
Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) tallied 17 and 15 kills, respectively, while King distributed 43 assists. Hack registered 27 digs, leading a group of four Hawks who reached double-digit dig totals.
Kacy Boburka and Erica Darpino ignited the Red Dragon attack with 17 and 14 kills, respectively, while Brittany Calvello charted a match-high 47 assists. Jessica Zerega nearly missed the 30-dig club with 29 on the contest, while Darpino supplied one block solo and six block assists.
New Paltz travels across the Hudson River to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Wednesday, Oct. 26, squaring off with non-conference Vassar College at 7 p.m.
