Second-Half Goal Sinks New Paltz Women’s Soccer in 1-0 Loss to Plattsburgh

Box Score Box Score

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (8-4-1, 3-2-0 SUNYAC) was unable to find the back of the net in a gritty defensive battle, as SUNY Plattsburgh (5-3-2, 3-1-0 SUNYAC) topped the Hawks by a 1-0 final in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Friday afternoon.

Plattsburgh's Leigh Metcalf cashed in on an Emily LaLone pass to score her third goal of the year at 55:02, and the Cardinals kept the Hawks scoreless down the stretch to maintain the shutout. As the final horn sounded, junior forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) ripped a shot that went wide of the goal, which served as the team's seventh shot of the afternoon. Plattsburgh wound up holding the edge in the shot margin, taking 12 on the contest.

Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) was forced into action often, as she set aside six shots in a full 90 minutes of action in goal. Danielle Schmitt and Alina Greiser split time in net for the Cardinals, combining to make three saves. Greiser, who entered the game at the start of the second half, earned the victory.

Junior midfielder Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip) paced the New Paltz attack, taking four shots, three of which were on goal. Plattsburgh's Lindsey Keyser uncorked a game-high six shots, and Vega stopped each of the four she put on frame.

The Hawks look to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon when they travel west to SUNY Potsdam, squaring off with the Bears in a 1 p.m. SUNYAC tilt.
