New Paltz Women’s Volleyball Rebounds with Pair of 3-0 Victories to Close Elmira Invitational

ELMIRA, N.Y.
– After going 1-1 on Friday night at the Elmira Invitational, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (5-4) rebounded on Saturday, winning each match it played convincingly on the second and final day of the tournament, which was hosted by Elmira College. The Hawks won, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-20), against Hartwick College before downing Utica College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-9).

Junior middle hitter Laura Stanhewicz (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and senior outside hitter Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) each earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for their strong play throughout the tournament.

Junior middle hitter Dana Vosilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) powered New Paltz to victory against Hartwick, as she had 10 kills on 15 total attempts for a .666 hitting percentage in addition to recording three blocks. DiGiovanna had a solid day on the attack as well, flooring 12 kills and just one error in 24 total attempts. Sophomore setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) handed out 19 assists, while sophomore libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) boasted 15 digs.

Against Utica, junior right side Eleanor Skovgaard (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Sutherland) led a balanced offense, as she had a team-high seven kills. Skovgaard also reinforced the front row on defense, totaling three block assists on the contest. Freshman outside hitter Alex Bizub (Linden, N.J./Cranford) had a team-high seven digs, while sophomore setter Brigid Moore (Victor, N.Y./Victor) dished out 22 assists.

New Paltz returns to the court next weekend when it hosts its annual Hawks Invitational from Sept. 16-17. On Friday, the Hawks face SUNY Fredonia and Mount Saint Mary College at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
