New Paltz Women’s Volleyball’s Home Winning Streak Snaps in Opening-Day Split at Hawks Invitational

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Since 2006—and for 33 straight home matches—the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (6-5) has defended its home court. In the opening match of the 2011 Hawks Invitational on Friday, however, the blue and orange fell, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-20), to SUNY Fredonia. The Hawks then responded with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the 6 p.m. match.

Senior outside hitter Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) led New Paltz against the Blue Devils, racking up 11 kills. Sophomore setters Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) and Brigid Moore (Victor, N.Y./Victor) split the setting duties, doling out 15 and 11 assists, respectively, while sophomore libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) paced the defense with 24 digs. On the front row, junior middle hitter Laura Stanhewicz (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) boasted two block solos and one block assist.

For Fredonia, Lindsey Olson hit .271 off 20 kills and seven errors in 48 total attempts, while Brittany Lis dished out 31 assists. Sarah Zureck, the team's libero, posted the match-high in digs with 28, while Reanne Sansone finished with six total blocks (one solo, five assist).

Junior middle hitter Dana Vosilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) hit at a .733 clip against Mount Saint Mary, flooring 11 kills with no errors in 15 total attempts. Junior outside hitter Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and freshman libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) had 12 and 11 digs, respectively, while Moore handed out 20 assists.

For the Blue Knights, Teresa Sorrentino landed a team-high eight kills, while Lauren Halverson dished out a match-high 23 assists. Mary Ann Raftery and Heather Schaeffer each boasted 13 digs to pace Mount Saint Mary's defense.

New Paltz finishes up action at the Hawks Invitational tomorrow, contesting Johnson & Wales University at 10 a.m. before concluding with a 2 p.m. match against Clarkson University. After day one, Clarkson is the only undefeated team at 2-0. New Paltz, Fredonia and Mount Saint Mary are each 1-1, while Johnson & Wales is 0-2.
