ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – A penalty-kick goal by junior forward
Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y/Pine Bush) in the 44th minute was all scoring the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (4-2-1) needed to shut down the previously streaking Raptors from Bard College (2-4) on Saturday afternoon in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., in non-conference action.
Last year's leading goal scorer for the Hawks was able to score right before half due to a handball penalty by Bard in the box. It was New Paltz's first penalty kick opportunity of the season, and Kondelka converted to send New Paltz to halftime with the lead.
New Paltz junior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) notched her fourth shutout of the season, shutting down the Raptors' four shots on goal. Her adversary, Amy Strawbridge, was only able to save four of New Paltz's five scoring chances, excluding the penalty kick.
Bard was not able to set up a second half scoring opportunity until the 77th minute, when Cosie Andujar took the Raptors' first shot of the half, sending the ball wide. Within the next minute, Bard got its only two shots on goal in the half from Alana Shaw, but Vega was able to make the save on both opportunities, preserving the lead.
At the 88:57 mark, junior midfielder
Stephanie Martinez (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored off an assist from junior midfielder
Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip) for her first goal of the season and to clinch the game for the Hawks.
New Paltz will next open play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) at home versus SUNY Cortland on Friday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m.
