OSWEGO, N.Y. – A strong defense was the catalyst for the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (5-4-1, 1-0-1 SUNYAC), as the Hawks beat SUNY Oswego (5-3-0, 0-2-0), 2-0, Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at Laker Field.
The only scores of the game came during a five-minute stretch in the first half, starting with a goal by junior midfielder/forward
Shanshe Khosroshvili (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) off an Oswego turnover in the 15th minute. Freshman
Brian Spina (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added a goal five minutes later on a header. Senior midfielder
Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) had an assist on both of the goals.
That was all the scoring the Hawks needed, as they played superb defense, turning away numerous throw-ins and pressure in their defensive zone. As a result of this suffocating defense, the Lakers got just five shots off the entire match.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) made two saves for the Hawks, while his counterpart, P.J. Goodwin, made two stops as well.
The win was the first in SUNYAC play this year for New Paltz, as they improve to 1-0-1 in the league and come back to campus with four points in the conference standings.
The Hawks continue on with conference play when they return home on Friday, Sept. 30, to start a four-game home stand.
