NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – In the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team's second-to-last regular-season home match of 2011 on Wednesday evening, the Hawks (11-7) topped The Sage Colleges (8-10), 3-0 (25-3, 25-15, 25-16), in non-conference action at the Hawk Center.
New Paltz hit a scintillating .696 in the first set before cooling off in the second and third frames, finishing the night at .293. Sage, meanwhile, got off to a slow start but finished strong. The Gators scored the first three points of the third stanza and wound up playing the Hawks tighter in the third set than in the other two.
Senior outside hitter
Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) paced the Hawks with eight kills, registering a .667 hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter
Dana Vosilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), junior outside hitter
Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and sophomore middle hitter Elizabeth Hauser (East Williston, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) all tied for the team's second-highest total in kills with four each. Sophomore setters
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) and
Brigid Moore (Victor, N.Y./Victor) handed out 14 and 11 assists, respectively, while Jacobson tallied 10 digs. On the front row defensively, freshman middle hitter
Alli Coleman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) led the way with three total blocks.
For Sage, Helen Putriment and Rebekah Parker tied for the team-high in kills with four, while Joanie Cooney distributed 12 assists. Putriment offered a match-high 14 digs, with the team's libero, Kelsey Wilson, following closely behind with 13.
New Paltz takes this weekend off from competition before contesting Williams College in its regular-season home finale. Prior to the start of the match, the program will honor its seniors in a pregame ceremony as a part of Senior Night.
