NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite consistent defensive pressure from the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (5-5-1, 1-1-1 SUNYAC) throughout the game, SUNY Geneseo (6-2-1, 3-0-0 SUNYAC) was able to force the deciding score past sophomore goalkeeper
Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) in the 86th minute, defeating the Hawks, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at the Turf Field.
Power saved three of the 12 shot attempts taken by Geneseo in this State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup. Power also stopped many of the Blue Knights' scoring chances in the box before they could start. Similarly, stellar defensive play from senior Hawk defender
Jamal Lis-Simmons (Highland, N.Y./Highland) prevented multiple opportunities for the Blue Knights to put shots on goal.
Geneseo, however, managed to scrounge up its best scoring opportunity late. Ian Mort, who had received a yellow card in the 19th minute, received a pass from a streaking Colin Begy, got around the last Hawk defender and was able to beat Power to the right side of the net for the eventual game-winning goal at 85:36.
New Paltz was able to get off the first two shot attempts of the game, but ultimately was outshot by Geneseo, 12-7.
Geneseo goalkeeper Sam Murphy earned his fifth shutout of the season, stopping two of New Paltz's shots on-frame.
The Hawks continue SUNYAC play at home Saturday, Oct. 1, when they take on The College of Brockport at 1 p.m. at the Turf Field.
