Lane’s Four-Goal Game Leads Hawks Into SUNYAC Tournament with 5-0 Win over Fredonia

Box Score

MARLBORO, N.Y. – Senior forward Harrison Lane (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) scored a career-best four goals to lead the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (10-7-1, 4-5-0 SUNYAC) past SUNY Fredonia (4-13-1, 3-5-1 SUNYAC) in the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest of the regular season on Saturday at Marlboro High School.

With the win, the Hawks clinched a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament by surpassing Fredonia and SUNY Oswego, which lost to SUNY Cortland on Saturday, for the No. 6 seed.

Lane's four goals cap off a five-goal weekend, which puts him in a first place tie with SUNY Potsdam's Eduardo Figueroa with eight goals in SUNYAC games this season. He now has nine total goals and 20 points on the year to lead the Hawks.

Lane's first goal came in the 14th minute off a feed from sophomore defender Brian Spina (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) to give the Hawks an early lead. He added his second in the 23rd minute when freshman forward Angelo DiMatteo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) drew the goalie to the right, then passed the ball to Lane who scored to the left of the net. Sophomore midfielder Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) also picked up an assist on the second goal.

Less than two minutes later, the Hawks got on the board again on sophomore midfielder Javier Ventas' (Madrid, Spain/Santa Maria del Pilar) first goal in the blue and orange. Sophomore forward Stephen Browne (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) provided a perfect cross to Ventas right in front of the net, where he fired it home to push the Hawks to a 3-0 lead, which they would take into the half.

The Hawks got right back to work in the second half, scoring again in the 49th minute. Lane found the back of the goal once again when he found himself with a wide-open right side of the net after a beautiful pass from junior midfielder Hobie Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). Lane's day still was not finished, as he picked up his fourth goal less than two minutes later off a pass into the box from senior midfielder Shanshe Khosroshvili (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow).

Not to be overshadowed by his teammates, sophomore goalkeeper Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) made six saves without giving up a goal for his third shutout and sixth win of the season. Mike Schreiner took the loss for the Blue Devils, allowing all five goals and making six stops. A.J. Grecco made four saves in relief for Fredonia.

Lane led a Hawk attack that fired off 29 shots to Fredonia's 12. New Paltz managed to put 15 of those shots on goal, while the Blue Devils put six on target. However, Fredonia held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks on the evening.

As the No. 6 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, the Hawks are headed for a matchup with third-seeded The College at Brockport (8-7-1, 6-2-1 SUNYAC). The SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27.

The Hawks travel to Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, where they will take on Purchase College in a non-conference matchup. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 8 as part of the Bard Raptors Classic, but was postponed due to inclement weather. The action is set to kick off at 5 p.m.
