FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (11-5-1, 4-4-1 SUNYAC) was knocked off by SUNY Fredonia (12-3-1, 6-2-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday, 3-2, in the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup of the regular season. The loss locks the Hawks in as the No. 6 seed in the SUNYAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
The Hawks took a 2-1 lead into halftime after freshman forward
Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) tied the game at one in the 33rd minute with an unassisted goal, and then the Hawks caught a break when the Blue Devils allowed an own goal just two minutes later. Fredonia responded with two second half goals by Kristi Putzig and Reilly Condidorio in the 59th and 69th minutes, respectively, to send the Hawks home with a loss.
Senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) made six saves, but allowed three goals to suffer the loss. Meaghan Meszaros allowed one New Paltz goal and an own goal for Fredonia, stopping four shots along the way.
Maggie Horan scored the first goal for the Blue Devils in the third minute of the game. Putzig provided the assist on that goal, giving her three points in the contest. Horan picked up an assist on Putzig's goal to earn a three-point day of her own, and Katie Kleine and Maria Green each had assists as well.
Beth Bowling led the Hawks with three shots on the afternoon, all three of which were on goal. Overall, the Hawks were outshot, 16-11, in the loss, including a 9-6 shots on goal deficit. However, New Paltz held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
As the No. 6 seed, the Hawks are slated for a rematch at No. 3 SUNY Fredonia in the SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals, which will be played on Saturday, Oct. 27 at a time that is yet to be determined.
New Paltz takes on The College at Old Westbury on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in their final tuneup before the SUNYAC Tournament. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Alumni Field.
