New Paltz Women’s Soccer Beats Potsdam with Late Rally, 2-0

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After 80 minutes without a score on the afternoon, senior defender Gabby Martino (Islip, N.Y./Islip) fired a cannon from 25 yards out to the top-right corner of the net to give the Hawks the only goal they would need, as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (10-2-1, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) shut out SUNY Potsdam (2-11-0, 0-5-0 SUNYAC), 2-0, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup from the Turf Field on Saturday.

Senior forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) provided a perfect feed from the right side to Martino to line her up for the game winner. Kondelka added one of her own in the 83rd minute with what looked like an exact replica of Martino's goal off a pass from sophomore defender Shaun O'Hanlon (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester).

Kondelka's three-point afternoon pushes her season point total to 18, tying her for the team lead with senior forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip). She now holds the team high with seven goals on the year.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) saved the only Potsdam shot on goal, as she picked up her eighth victory and sixth shutout of the season. Potsdam's Jamie Durant made 12 saves on the afternoon, but allowed the two late goals to suffer the loss.

New Paltz significantly outshot the Bears, 29-6, including a 15-1 margin in shots on net. Kondelka led the Hawks with four shots on goal and freshman forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) added three of her own.

The Hawks take flight again on Wednesday, Oct. 10, with a home non-conference matchup with Drew University. The action is set to kick off at 4 p.m. from Alumni Field.
