NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The reigning State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champion, State University of New York at New Paltz (1-0-0) women's soccer team, got its season started on the right foot, shutting out Mount Saint Mary College (0-1-0) Friday afternoon, 1-0, in their home opener and the opening matchup of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament at Alumni Field.

Senior midfielder Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip) stole the game for the Hawks when her header off a feed from sophomore midfielder Rebecca Rothman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) struck the back of the net, giving New Paltz the only score of the game in the 74th minute.

After leading the SUNYAC last season with 13 shutouts, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) picked up right where she left of, opening the season with a blank slate. Vega made two saves en route to her first victory of the season.

The Hawks' back four held the visiting Knights to just six shots, two of which were on net. New Paltz outshot Mount Saint Mary, 19-6, and held the edge in corner kicks, 3-0.

New Paltz returns to action on Saturday, hosting New Jersey City University (0-0-1) in the final matchup of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., with SUNY Cortland (0-0-1) facing off with Mount Saint Mary at 12 p.m.
