Box Score
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (6-2-0, 0-1-0 SUNYAC) was unable to rally back from an early deficit, falling to SUNY Cortland (4-2-2, 1-0-0 SUNYAC), 3-1, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest at Jets Field on Friday afternoon.
Cortland's Kelly Knight scored what would be the game winner in the 52nd minute of the contest. After beating two defenders, she fired to the top right corner of the net successfully, giving the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Knight finished the day with four points including the goal and a pair of assists.
Senior midfielder
Gabby Martino (Islip, N.Y./Islip) got the Hawks on the board in the 65th minute with a blast from 35 yards out, but it would not be enough to get New Paltz back in the game. The goal was Martino's second on the year.
Emma Whittle and Jessica McFadden picked up the other goals for the Red Dragons, while Stacey Wood assisted Knight's score. Taylor Teal allowed one goal and tallied a save in her first start and win in goal this season.
Senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) made three saves, but allowed three goals en route to her second loss of the season.
As a team, the Hawks were only able to fire off four shots on the afternoon, half of which were on net. Cortland put the ball on goal on six of its 19 shots.
The Hawks travel to SUNY Oswego tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 22, to take on the Lakers in their second SUNYAC matchup of the season. Originally scheduled for 1 p.m., the game has been moved up to 11 a.m. to avoid inclement weather.
