Cordini’s Bicycle Kick Lifts New Paltz Men’s Soccer to 1-0 Double OT Win Over Oswego

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – With his back to the net, senior midfielder Mateo Cordini (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours) left the ground and blasted a bicycle kick from the top of the box, beating the goalkeeper to the right post to push the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (4-3-1, 1-1-0 SUNYAC) to victory in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup over SUNY Oswego (1-7-0, 0-2-0 SUNYAC), 1-0, in double overtime Saturday at Alumni Field.

Cordini's fourth goal of the season came at the 102:07 mark off an assist from senior midfielder Shanshe Khosroshvili (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow). The goal broke the scoreless tie after 102 minutes of impressive play by both goalkeepers and defenses.

Sophomore goalkeeper Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) picked up his third win and second shutout of the season after stopping five shots. Oswego's Pat Breen made 11 saves on the afternoon and made impressive stops left and right to keep the Hawks off the board until the final shot.

New Paltz almost won the game at the 80-minute mark, when sophomore defender Brian Spina (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) blasted a shot from 40 yards out, but Breen made a diving stop before the ball could cross the line.

The Hawks fired off 25 shots on the afternoon, 12 of which were on goal. In comparison, Oswego was only able to take nine shots with five going on target. Cordini led the Hawks with seven shots, while sophomore midfielder Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) added five of his own.

New Paltz returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 25, with a non-conference matchup with Bard College. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
