Kondelka Sets Program Goal Record with Game Winner in 1-0 Victory over Geneseo

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) scored the game winner with a header in the 59th minute to push the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (8-2-0, 2-1-0 SUNYAC) past SUNY Geneseo (0-7-2, 0-2-1 SUNYAC), 1-0, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Friday on the Turf Field. The goal was her 22nd career score with the blue and orange, which sets a new program best.

Kondelka headed the ball off a cross from senior forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) from the right wing to score her fourth goal of the season. She now sits atop the record board in both career goals and points. Abravanel's assist was her fifth of the year and increases her point total to 15, both of which are team bests.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) picked up her fifth shutout of the season, as well as her sixth win. She made seven saves in Friday's rainy triumph.

Geneseo's Bethany Kwarta almost tied the game at one late in the second half. A cross ended up in front of the New Paltz goal and left Kwarta in good position to score, but her header bounced too high and sailed over the net.

Geneseo goalkeeper Julia Sanger made three saves, but allowed the lone goal en route to her seventh loss on the year.

The Hawks were actually outshot by Geneseo, 13-12, and only put three shots on goal compared to the Blue Knights' seven. New Paltz held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks over the visitors.

New Paltz returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 29, as they host SUNYAC opponent The College at Brockport. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
