Box Score
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After taking the lead in the 10th minute of the game, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (8-2-1, 2-1-1 SUNYAC) allowed the tying goal in the second half. Both teams were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way, as the Hawks played to a draw with The College at Brockport (7-1-2, 2-1-1 SUNYAC), 1-1, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup at Alumni Field on Saturday.
Senior forward
Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) scored for the second time in as many days to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. Senior forward
Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) assisted with a cross from the right wing that put Kondelka in a perfect position to score. Brockport's Katie Gildemeyer knotted the game up at one in the 66th minute when her shot from the top-right corner of the box deflected off a defender to the right post.
20 seconds into the second half, the Hawks had a chance to tie the game when Abravanel provided a perfect feed to senior midfielder
Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip). Bowling beat the goalie to the left post, but as New Paltz was celebrating, the official called the Hawks offsides, which offset the goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) made two saves and allowed a goal en route to her first draw of the season. Brockport's Hannah Conine earned the tie, making two saves in relief of starting goalkeeper Laura Thompson, who picked up a save of her own and allowed the New Paltz goal.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Hawks by a 14-9 margin, but the Hawks held a 4-3 edge in shots on net. Brockport's Vanessa Gillette fired off a game-high six shots, while sophomore midfielder
Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) led the Hawks with three.
For tiebreaker purposes in the SUNYAC standings, the two teams went to penalty kicks after the second overtime period, in which Brockport edged New Paltz, 4-1.
New Paltz will host two more SUNYAC matchups next weekend, Oct. 5-6. The Hawks will take on SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday at 4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
