New Paltz Men’s Soccer Rallies to 2-1 Victory Over Staten Island

Box Score

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.Freshman midfielder Joseph Hughes (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) finessed past two defenders then fired away from 15 yards out to break the tie and lead the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (1-1-1) to its first victory of the season by a score of 2-1 over the College of Staten Island (2-2-0) at Bard College on Friday.

Hughes' goal in the 81st minute was his first in the blue and orange and marks the first time this season that the Hawks have scored multiple goals in a game.

The Hawks got on the board first in Friday's contest, when freshman forward Casey Terramoccia (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) netted his first goal as a Hawk on a header from four yards out to beat the goalie and give the Hawks the 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. Junior midfielder Javier Ventas (Madrid, Spain/Santa María del Pilar) and junior forward Mike Jacobsen (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) each picked up their first assists of the season on the score.

The lead was not held for long, as Staten Island knotted up the score at one apiece just 53 seconds later on an Anh Le goal. 53 seconds after Hughes' game winner, Staten Island came close to another quick equalizer, but sophomore goalkeeper Andres Montoya (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) turned it away for his only save of the evening, sealing his first win of the year.

The Hawks outshot the Dolphins, 20-6, in Friday's matchup, including an edge in shots on net, 10-2. Dolphins' goalkeeper Ahmed El-Gahreib was forced to make eight saves and allowed both New Paltz goals, picking up the loss.

New Paltz returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8, as the Bard Raptors Classic continues from Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. The Hawks take on Purchase College at 3 p.m.
