Men's Soccer Keys In On Big SUNYAC Weekend

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team will make a late season run to qualify for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs with two away games against SUNY Fredonia on Friday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. against Buffalo State.

Records: The Hawks will enter Friday afternoon's game with a 4-11-3, 2-4-1 SUYNAC record. Fredonia sports a 4-10-1, 1-5-1 record. Buffalo State, which hosts Oneonta on Friday afternoon, has a 7-7-1, 3-4-0 record.

Scouting the Hawks: With two wins this weekend, New Paltz will earn a berth into the SUNYAC Tournament... Currently, the Hawks sit two points back of Buffalo State in the SUNYAC standings, and they are three points behind SUNY Geneseo... Should New Paltz win out, it would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over both Geneseo and Buffalo State... Mount Saint Mary College junior forward Matt Garcia connected on a free kick with 19 seconds to play in the second overtime to lead the visiting Knights to a 2-1 victory over the Hawks on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play at Alumni Field… Garcia's goal, which looped into the left side of goal past Hawks junior goalie Andres Montoya, put a dampener on the final home game of the season for five New Paltz seniors… The Hawks had a good look on goal just seconds before Garcia's tally, but freshman defender Paul Wehner had his shot stopped by MSMC tender Matt Darling. Senior Bernardo Menendez leads the Hawks in scoring with four goals and four assists.

Scouting Fredonia: The Blue Devils are looking to snap a two-game losing streak (and have lost in three of their last four games) … Fredonia's defeated Buffalo State 4-2 for its lone conference win on Oct. 5… Senior midfielder Jay Dry leads the team in scoring with five goals… Senior midfielder Luke Tylutki and senior defender Jake Persons lead the team with five assists each.

Last Meeting vs. Fredonia: (Box Score): On Oct. 20, 2012, then senior forward Harrison Lane scored a career-best four goals to lead the Hawks to a 5-0 victory in the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest of the regular season at Marlboro High School… With the win, the Hawks clinched a berth and the No. 6 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, surpassing Fredonia and SUNY Oswego, which lost to SUNY Cortland on Saturday. 

What's Next: Fredonia travels to Liberty League Hobart College on October 29 for a 4:00 p.m. game.

Scouting Buffalo State: The Bengals meet Oneonta on Friday afternoon and have a 7-7-1, 3-4-0 record heading into that contest… The Bengals sit in sixth place in SUNYAC standings and are in the playoff picture… Ten different Buffalo State players have scored this season, with a pair of players, senior midfielder C.J. Scirto and junior forward Dylan Ross with five goals each… Each player has five assists on the season.

Last Meeting vs. Buffalo State (Box Score): On Oct. 19, 2012, two second half goals pushed the Hawks to a 2-1 victory over the Bengals in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game played at Marlboro High School... The win kept the Hawks in contention for a SUNYAC Tournament berth... After a scoreless first half, then senior forward Harrison Lane put the Hawks up a goal at the 50-minute mark after a scramble in front of the goal ended with Lane having an open net. In the 62nd minute, then freshman midfielder Joseph Hughes pushed the lead to two after firing a cross from graduated senior midfielder Mateo Cordini past the keeper to the back of the net. Then sophomore goalkeeper Steven Domino picked up his fifth victory of the season after stopping three shots and giving up a single goal.

What's Next: Buffalo State hosts Nazareth on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m.

Coaches: New Paltz is coached by Gene Ventriglia in his third year. Fredonia is led by P.J. Gondek in his 14th year. Buffalo State is coached by Mark Howlett in his 13th year.
