Women's Basketball Kicks Off 2013-14 at Redlands' Lee Fulmer Tip-Off Classic

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team faces a pair of unfamiliar opponents this weekend at the Lee Fulmer Tip-Off Classic hosted by the University of Redlands, taking on Chapman University on Friday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. (PDT) before matching up with host Redlands on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. (PDT).

Records: All three teams enter this weekend at 0-0, and their Friday contests will be their season openers. New Paltz went 24-4 (16-2 SUNYAC) in 2012-13, Chapman went 21-6 (12-4 SCIAC) in 2012-13 and Redlands went 19-7 (12-4 SCIAC).

Scouting the Hawks: The Hawks won their first-ever SUNYAC title in 2012-13, winning the SUNYAC Tournament after claiming the conference's regular-season championship… They also made their first-ever NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament and fell to Babson College in the first round… New Paltz returns just two starters from last year's roster: senior forward Jeanette Scott and junior guard Shannan Walker… The Hawks sport a roster of just 10 student-athletes, four of whom are freshmen… Head coach Jamie Seward has never won fewer than 16 games in a season since his arrival at New Paltz in 2006-07.

What's Next: New Paltz hosts cross-river rival Vassar College in its 2013-14 home opener at the Hawk Center on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m.

Scouting the Panthers: Chapman defeated Redlands, 64-62, in the semifinal round of the SCIAC Women's Basketball Postseason Tournament in 2012-13 but ended up falling to top-seeded Cal Lutheran University, 59-54, in the final… Since 2003, head coach Carol Jue has led Chapman to seven NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament appearances and seven 20-win seasons… Senior guard Kimi Takaoka earned First-Team All-SCIAC and Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America honors in 2012-13, while sophomore forward Sandra Gao was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year.

What's Next: Chapman next hosts George Fox University on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m.

Scouting the Bulldogs: Redlands, which held the No. 3 seed in the 2013 SCIAC Postseason Tournament, fell, 64-62, to Chapman in the semifinals… The Bulldogs' lone non-conference losses in 2012-13 came against Lewis & Clark College and Trinity (Texas) University… Redlands won its final four conference games of the season to finish with 19 victories… Three 2013 All-SCIAC performers return to the Bulldogs' roster this year: senior guard Marika Stanton (First Team), senior guard Colleen Goeser (Second Team) and senior forward Brittany Oster (Second Team)… Redlands takes on Lyndon State College on Friday at 5 p.m. (PDT) before its game against the Hawks on Saturday.

What's Next: Redlands next competes at the UCSC Hampton Inn Classic from Friday-Saturday, Nov. 22-23, hosted by UC Santa Cruz.

Coaches: New Paltz is led by eighth-year head coach Jamie Seward, while Chapman is directed by 11th-year head coach Carol Jue and Redlands is helmed by seventh-year head coach Rich Murphy.
