NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team looks to level its overall record back at .500 on Tuesday night, as the Hawks travel to Willimantic, Conn., to face Eastern Connecticut State University at 7:30 p.m. in their final tune-up before the start of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.

Records: New Paltz comes into Tuesday's non-conference match-up with a 2-3 overall record. Eastern Connecticut State sports a 5-1 overall mark.

Scouting the Hawks: New Paltz fell below .500 for the first time this season on Tuesday, losing, 71-57, to Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y… The Hawks shot just 30.8 percent (20-of-65) from the floor for the game, which included a 19 percent (4-of-21) mark from distance… New Paltz never led, falling in a 5-0 hole early… Graduate student guard Nick Taldi scored 12 points coming off the bench to spark the Hawk attack, and he added five rebounds… Junior guard Taylor Sowah chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds… The Hawks are 3-7 all-time against Eastern Connecticut State, with their last win coming on Dec. 17, 1952.

Statistical Leaders: Junior guard Taylor Sowah leads the Hawks in scoring with 14.4 points per game, and he also holds the team lead in rebounding with 6.2 rebounds per game… Senior guard Andrew Joseph has settled into the starting point guard role, dishing out 3.4 assists per game… Joseph and Sowah average a team-high 1.2 steals per game.

Scouting the Warriors: Eastern Connecticut State stretched its win streak to four on Tuesday, topping Connecticut College, 69-45… The Warriors limited Connecticut College to 23.6 percent (13-of-55) shooting from the floor, and Eastern Connecticut State shot at a 37.1 percent (23-of-62) clip from the field… While senior guard Brian Salzillo, one of the Warriors' top scorers, was held in check, Eastern Connecticut relied on 22 points each from sophomore guard Trachone Preston and senior guard Mike Garrow… On Nov. 30, Salzillo was named to D3Hoops.com's first Men's Basketball Team of the Week for the 2013-14 season after averaging 25.2 points in five games on 52.5 percent shooting… Eastern Connecticut State, which was known as Willimantic State during the 1950s, holds a four-game win streak in the series.

Statistical Leaders: Senior guard Brian Salzillo averages a team-best 22.3 points per game, and he is joined in double-digit scoring average by senior guard Mike Garrow (18.5 ppg) and sophomore guard Trachone Preston (13.0 ppg)… Salzillo's scoring average currently is tied for 47th in NCAA Division III… Garrow averages a double-double a game with 10.8 rebounding average and adds an average of 4.7 assists per game.

Last Meeting: (Box Score): Hot three-point shooting from Eastern Connecticut State in the first half ultimately doomed New Paltz in a 78-74 non-conference loss to the Warriors on Dec. 4, 2012, at the Hawk Center… Eastern Connecticut shot 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from distance in the first 20 minutes of play, but it cooled off in the second half, going just 1-of-9 from three-point range... The Warriors also dominated the glass, holding a 36-27 edge in rebounds… New Paltz did go 50 percent (9-of-18) from three-point land for the game, and it outshot the Warriors by a 46.3 percent-to-43.9 percent margin... Then-senior guard/forward Shereef Taylor (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) led the Hawks with a game-high 27 points off 10-of-16 shooting, including a 5-of-9 mark from long range… Then-senior forward Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) chipped in 18 points, while then-senior guard Shalik Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) added 15… For Eastern Connecticut, then-junior guard Brian Salzillo scored 26 points—18 of which came off three-pointers—coming off the bench, while his teammate, then-senior forward Chris Robitaille, added 18 points in reserve duty… Then-junior forward Mike Garrow also reached double-digit scoring figures with 17 points… Then-senior Joe Ives helped power the offense with six assists, while Robitaille had a game-high eight rebounds.

What's Next: New Paltz opens up SUNYAC play on Friday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m. against SUNY Fredonia… Eastern Connecticut State kicks off Little East Conference action on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. against Rhode Island College.
