SUNYAC Playoff Scenarios for New Paltz Basketball Teams

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – With this weekend (Friday, Feb. 15, through Saturday, Feb. 16) being the last one of regular-season competition for basketball teams in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), playoff scenarios are starting to take shape. The State University of New York at New Paltz's teams are in the thick of these races, and the following will serve as a guide for this weekend's games.

Women's Basketball (22-2, 16-1 SUNYAC)
Friday, Feb. 15 vs. Oneonta at 6 p.m.

The New Paltz women's basketball team has locked up the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, and Friday's game against Oneonta only has meaning through strengthening the Hawks' résumé for a potential at-large bid should the SUNYAC title elude them. New Paltz will host the 2013 SUNYAC Women's Basketball Tournament from Friday, Feb. 22, through Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Hawk Center.

Men's Basketball (10-14, 8-9 SUNYAC)
Friday, Feb. 15 vs. Oneonta at 8 p.m.

The New Paltz men's basketball has qualified for the SUNYAC Men's Basketball Tournament for the past three seasons. To make it four in a row, a few scenarios could happen:

  • New Paltz wins on Friday, and Buffalo State splits against The College at Brockport and SUNY Geneseo.

This seems like the most likely scenario, since both Geneseo and Brockport are currently among the top six in the conference, while Oneonta is out of the playoff picture. This would mean that both Buffalo State and New Paltz would finish 9-9 in league play, and New Paltz holds the tiebreaker with a win over first-place SUNY Cortland.

  • New Paltz loses on Friday, and Buffalo State drops games to Brockport and Geneseo.

This scenario is less likely, since it assumes that Buffalo State will lose twice on a do-or-die playoff qualifying weekend. Should this happen, New Paltz and Buffalo State would finish in a tie at 8-10 in league play, and New Paltz would hold the tiebreaker with a win over first-place Cortland.

  • New Paltz wins on Friday, and Buffalo State drops games to Brockport and Geneseo

This scenario shares the same likelihood as the one above, but it is the most clear-cut one; New Paltz would be at 9-9 in the league, while Buffalo State would finish at 8-10. No tiebreakers are needed in this scenario, as New Paltz is the clear-cut No. 6.

  • New Paltz wins on Friday, and Brockport drops games to Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia.

This is the least likely of all the scenarios, since Brockport is a game and a half up on the Hawks in the league standings. But, if this were to happen, the two teams would be locked at 9-9 in league play, and the Hawks would hold the tiebreaker with a win over first-place Cortland.

New Paltz men's basketball would miss the playoffs in the following scenarios:
  • New Paltz wins on Friday, Buffalo State defeats Brockport and Geneseo and Brockport beats Fredonia.

This would put the Hawks at 9-9 in the league, but Brockport and Buffalo State would finish at 10-8 in the SUNYAC. This would leave New Paltz as the clear-cut No. 7 team.

  • New Paltz loses on Friday and Buffalo State splits against Brockport and Geneseo.

This would put the Hawks at 8-10 in the league, while Buffalo State would sit at 9-9. This would leave New Paltz as the clear-cut No. 7 team.
