Women’s Volleyball Concludes Captains Classic with Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (1-3) finished out the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University with a split on Saturday, losing to fifth-ranked Christopher Newport, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-15), before topping Lynchburg College, 3-1 (25-16, 27-25, 22-25, 25-22).

New Paltz finished the weekend 1-3, with losses to Edgewood College, Berry (Ga.) College and Christopher Newport and a win against Lynchburg.

Senior libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) became the program's first-ever student-athlete to reach 2,000 digs, as her final one against Lynchburg clinched the milestone.

The Hawks were unable to overcome host Christopher Newport, as the Captains hit at a .282 clip during the match and held visiting New Paltz to a .000 hitting percentage. The Captains owned a 6-1 advantage in blocks and corralled 51 digs to the Hawks' 45.

Junior outside hitter Alli Coleman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) keyed the New Paltz attack, fashioning a .364 hitting percentage with a team-high five kills. Hack had a stellar match, boasting 13 digs and five service aces, while senior setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) handed out 17 assists.

For Christopher Newport, Jessie Kolden and Harper Smith each had eight kills, while Paxton Crooks and Rachel Conway combined for 31 assists as setters in a 6-2 offense. Smith and Krista Hughes led the Captains' front row defense with four blocks each, while Rachel Close tallied a match-high 15 digs.

New Paltz saved its best match of the tournament for the nightcap, as the Hornets were unable to stop the offensive tandem of sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) and freshman middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Borquist floored 16 kills, while Roessler landed 13. As a team, the Hawks hit .160, which bested Lynchburg's .128 hitting percentage. The Hornets did, however, edge the Hawks in blocks, 8-7.

Despite the fact that there were three tie scores and two lead changes in the first set, New Paltz relied on an 8-0 run to mount a 22-12 advantage. The two teams sided each other out twice before Lynchburg received back-to-back kills with set point on the line. Junior outside hitter Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) ended the stanza with a kill, and the Hawks won the frame, 25-16.

Set two appeared to be another lopsided New Paltz win, as the Hawks led, 24-15, after rattling off five straight points. Improbably, the Hornets scored eight unanswered points, and a Sierra Strathy kill knotted the tally at 24-all. Borquist put New Paltz back on top with a kill, but a Hawk attacking error squared the score once again, this time at 25-all. A Hornet attacking error combined with a Hack service ace allowed the Hawks to escape with the set-two triumph by a 27-25 count.

New Paltz put together a strong run in the third, as the Hawks scored nine straight points to build a 17-14 lead. Lynchburg wound up scoring the next three points and captured the momentum down the stretch, and the Hornets prevailed, 25-22, to force a fourth set.

After back-and-forth play midway through the fourth, New Paltz began scoring points in bunches, and that allowed the Hawks to construct a 23-21 edge. Lynchburg made it a one-point game before a costly Hornet blocking error brought up match point. King took a Coleman set and pounded out a kill during the ensuing rally, and New Paltz won the set by a 25-22 final.

Beyond Borquist and Roessler, King helped run the offense with 40 assists, while four Hawks reached double-digit totals in digs: Borquist (17), Herbst (16), Hack (14) and King (10). Roessler tallied six total blocks, while Hack served up five aces. King notched a double-double with her 40 assists and 10 digs, while Borquist joined her with 16 kills and 17 digs.

For Lynchburg, Strathy's 14 kills led the way, and she hit .419 for the match. Sam Page finished with 19 digs, while Mackenzie Ross and Gabby Myers combined for 41 assists. Notably, Strathy and Kelly Layne each collected four total blocks.

New Paltz returns to action next weekend, as it competes at the University of Rochester Volleyball Invitational from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 6-7. While there, the Hawks take on St. John Fisher College, Skidmore College, Hamilton College and Rochester.
