Women's Volleyball Settles for Split on Day Two of Hawks Invitational

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (8-4) capped off its 11th-annual Hawks Invitational on Saturday at the Hawk Center with a split to finish at 3-1 for the weekend. New Paltz fell to No. 21 Salisbury University (12-1) by a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 28-26, 25-16) final before bouncing back with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-19) win against Mount Saint Mary College (3-9) in the nightcap.

Senior setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) and sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) each represented New Paltz on the All-Tournament Team. Katie Stouffer from Salisbury was named the Tournament MVP, while Julie Poston (Salisbury), Shaelynn Schmidt (Ithaca) and Kayla Kurka (Mount Saint Mary) joined King and Borquist on the All-Tournament Team.

Salisbury captured the Hawks Invitational title, becoming just the fourth school in the 11 years of the event to earn the honor.

Against Salisbury, New Paltz hit at just a .061 clip. After achieving a .109 hitting percentage in the first set, the Hawks hit -.021 in the second, .077 in the third and .094 in the fourth. Salisbury, meanwhile, hit .162, including a .367 hitting percentage in the fourth set.

Borquist led the Hawks with a double-double, tallying 12 kills and 10 digs. King also boasted a double-double, finishing with 35 assists and 12 digs. Junior outside hitter Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) served as the team's libero and came up with 21 digs, while freshman middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) collected six total blocks.

New Paltz limited Mount Saint Mary to a -.011 hitting percentage in the nightcap and got back on track offensively itself, hitting at a .245 clip. Borquist and freshman outside hitter Katy Braddon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) tied for the team-high in kills against the Knights with seven apiece, while Herbst and Borquist gathered 15 and 11 digs, respectively. King handed out 21 assists in just two sets of action.

The Hawks will contest the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, Sept. 18, in their first mid-week match of the season. The first serve is set for 7 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
